Burt Lancaster stars in this American biopic based on the true story of Robert Stroud, as told by Tom Gaddis in his renowned biography. Hardened murderer Stroud (Lancaster) is a withdrawn prison inmate who discovers a way of dealing with his isolation by caring for a sick bird. As he nurses the bird back to health Stroud develops an interest in ornithology and becomes a world authority on the subject, and following his transfer to the notorious 'Rock' in San Francisco Bay Stroud's interest does not abate.
