Ralph Fiennes stars in this comedy drama directed by Nicholas Hytner. In 1916, the Ramsden Choral Society in Yorkshire has seen most of its members and its choir master depart for the Western Front. Dr. Henry Guthrie (Fiennes), recently returned from working in Germany, is reluctantly hired to lead the choir and he begins recruiting new members before attempting to stage a performance of Edward Elgar's 'The Dream of Gerontius'. Despite the committee's reservations, Guthrie's talent is undeniable and as he showcases new voices, those awaiting news from the Front find some measure of hope to cling to during the dark days of war. The cast also includes Robert Emms, Alun Armstrong and Mark Addy.
