Italian director Federico Fellini's epic tale of Roman decadence centred on the adventures of gossip columnist Marcello (Marcello Mastroianni) and his hedonistic lifestyle. Despite his girlfriend Emma (Yvonne Furneaux)'s overdose Marcello continues to pursue a number of different women, including wealthy heiress Maddalena (Anouk Aimée) and newly arrived movie starlet Sylvia (Anita Ekberg), who Marcello shows some of Rome's most picturesque tourist attractions to. Throughout the various parties and social gatherings that Marcello attends he appears to be equally attracted and repelled by the ostentatious behaviour of the guests and the opulence present in the social circles that he interacts with.
